The great Joseph Cornell lived on Utopia Parkway in Flushing, Queens. Ken Taylor channeled Cornell and his art from Chicken Bridge Road in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Street names are a kind of poetry. self-portrait as joseph cornell is a book of box-shaped sonnets, each followed by a three-line kicker, that substitute toy words, slang, Carolina words for the sort of stuff Cornell found on Manhattan’s 14th Street and arranged in the boxes he aged in his oven. Taylor’s self-portrait is his version of Gertrude Stein’s The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, in which the canny Stein wrote her own autobiography as that of the woman in her life Alice B. Toklas. Here’s a story: The poet John Ashbery and the painter Trevor Winkfield were visiting Cornell when a boy bounded through his backyard hedges with one of his beautiful boxes. “Thanks, Mr. Cornell,” said the boy, “for lending this to me.” Thanks, Mr. Taylor, for enlisting mr. cornell to be your charlie mc carthy.
